Imagine that you have spent most of your being alive in one job. Now, imagine that you lose your job tomorrow. Along with losing the security of a nonstop paycheck and retirement benefits, you lose your health insurance coverage as anyhow. No matter where you are perched on the political fence, the lack of affordable health insurance in the United States is a serious issue.

According to Infoplease, 14.2% of Maryland residents more established no health insurance in the year 2004-2005. The lack of affordable health insurance in the United States is a serious problem which affects all of us. I know about the serious problems that result savours the lack of health insurance, for the reason that I am writing from personal experience.

Since taking over my Grandfathers agency in the early nineties, my Dad has been a self-employed headquarters furniture dealer. Like many other self-employed people, Dad could not afford to carry me on his companys health insurance policy. The expensive insurance premiums which Dad would have paid to carry me on his companys insurance policy were mostly due to my having a physical disability. Since I have Cerebral Palsy, a preexisting condition, carrying me on his health insurance was a very expensive promind-set. At the time Dad took over the business, my family could not afford to carry me on his companys health insurance policy.

As a result, I was without health insurance for seven years. During this time, I discovered many obstacles to receiving quality health care. This is especially true when you are a consumer with significant medical needs. For any medical issues related to my orthopedic needs resulting from Cerebral Palsy, I received medical care at two different free clinics. One of the clinics was located in my area. God wired me to be an optimistic woman. As you can imagine, I expected to receive excellent care, at least from the clinic in my area. I was taken aback and disappointed in the substandard care I received at both clinics.

It is beyond doubt not encouraging for somebody to be treated as an object and not a wonderfully God-created human being. However, I am saddened and dismayed to results that this was my experience with the no-cost options for my health care. I am blessed to be a bright, articulate and intelligent lady. Unfortunately, I was not treated like an intelligent lady by either of the two health workers who provided me care at both of the clinics. probing back, I now realize that I was treated more like an object than an articulate woman who has thoughts, feelings and viewpoints that matter.

The only reason that I even consulted with clinic doctors was due to the fact that I was experiencing a very serious and painful medical situation related to my disability. After with reference to fifteen years of efforts to keep my right hip in the socket using several forms of physical therapy, I learned a very painful lesson. Our bodies dont always agree with the desires of our hearts. My hip went out of socket in January, 1994. In retrospect, I had years of lesson about my hip, but the doctor was a difficult and arrogant man. This particular doctor remains very well-known for how he performs surgery. However, the fact that this doctor lacked warmth and sensitivity and had the bedside act of a tree stump was a major red flag to me. Although this doctor originally diagnosed my right hip as going out of socket in May, 1993, I chose not to authorize him to execute on me. At the time, this was the prudent decision because our doctor-patient rapport was not the best. We were socially alright, but we really didnt get along at all.

The longer that my family and I searched for a knowledgeable, loyal and caring doctor, the more intolerable my pain became. Eventually, my pain reached the point where my only comfortable position was complete bed rest. If you have ever traveled to another country, then you can probably appreciate how fantastically blessed we are to be existing in the United States of America. mockingly, as wealthy as our country is, there still exist horrible differences in the treatment of the people who have health insurance and those who do not. As both an American and a patient, I am deeply saddened and disappointed that this is the unacceptable reality of our current healthcare system.

Physically, I knew that I could not take the pain much longer. Imagine that someone is constantly sticking your leg with blistering, prickly, pins for over seven years. It is excruciating! That is accurately how I felt all the time. I knew I needed major surgery to be comfortable again and have any chance of regaining my ability to function in my every day life. So that I would receive much needed health insurance for an operation which I seriously needed, my mom went to work part-time as an Attendance Secretary for the largest school system in our state.

A month ahead my senior year of high school, I underwent hip relocation surgery. I was in a full body cast for three months during the hottest time of the year! My recovery, which was originally expected to only last six weeks, in reality lasted three and a half years. As a result, I underwent many hours and forms of abnormal physical therapy. When you are sixteen, you dont always appreciate the end aspiration. During this time, I did not understand why I still hurt, or why my therapist Cara was motivating me with music to work unless I screamed and cried. Looking back now, I love Cara very much for her dedication, encouragement and commitment to me and my healing process. I knew that my healing process was in the Lords control and timing all along!

I am so incredibly thankful, both for the improvement and return to normalcy of my health, and Gods abundant blessings in each new day. despondently, the lack of affordable health insurance remains a serious problem for many Americans. In my opinion, this is pathetic and unacceptable. We are in a healthcare crisis in the United States and are in serious need of a national health insurance policy. As both a patient who receives healthcare on a continuing basis and a tax-paying citizen, I hope and pray that the establishiment of a national health insurance program is realized in the near future.

In our economy today people are almost oomphd to buy the low-pricedest assurance policy close by or have no insurance at the whole lot. People are skimping on coverage and will end wakeful with a medical bill that exceeds the money they saved by evoking a cheap premium. I see this every single day because a health insurance sales source. I have a few tips that can aid you if you find yourself having a hard time selling your policy or get the statement, “Im shopping for the cheapest price and will call you back later”. No sales creature wants to take heed to this. Follow these tips and you will find that your sales will increase.

The Golden Rule:
investigate others as you would want to be treated. Always be polite of your prospects no matter what age they are. Just using “please” and “thank you” can go a long way with people. Your clients are coming to you for your advice and help and they trust you to have their best interests in mind. Just think about how you would want a loved one treated if they were the ones out shopping for insurance. Would you want someone to be rude to your grandparents, parents, siblings or friends or treat one another like they are dumb for asking questions? I highly doubt it. The people you will be talking to are someones grandparents, parents, siblings and friends. Treat people as family unit. Your customer will feel much more comfortable and will open up to you if you are warm and dear to them. They will ask all of their questions instead of being afraid that if they ask you might act as if they should already know the answer. Insurance can be confusing to someone who hasnt had extensive training and it is a huge poll that they will make that will impact their quality of life.

Ask, snoop on, Ask, Listen:
Always ask longing questions to find out what your prospect is looking for in an insurance policy and what they need to have to make the policy worth their money. Just asking questions isnt enough, you must listen carefully to their explanations so you can better identify what you can do to help them. If you dont get an answer to your question that you understand then try rephrasing the question until you understand their answer because you never want to assume anything. By asking questions and listening to the answers you will build trust with your prospect. They will be able to see that you are looking out for them and their requires. You show that you are concerned with their health needs and that you want to make sure that they get everything the deserve and need. This also helps retain your clients because they are not going to have to call you back after the policy has started to ask you questions that werent answered at the time of the sale. You will look like you are an clever agent who knows what they are doing and that is what people want. They want a professional, not someone who is just looking for a commission.

Listen for buying signals:
By using the ask and listen tip you will quickly begin to pick up on buying signals. When your customer says things like “When I go to my doctor…” or “Do I pay my premiums on the first of the month” they are already putting themselves into your policy. A more subtle buying signal is the customer asking about how they will do an enrollment. They are already thinking about the enrollment process in their minds and could possibly thinking about doing it that day if the process is simple. Then you have your more obvious buying signal, the customer tells you they want the policy. If you sell policies in person then the buying signals are much easier to pick up on because you can read the customers body language, facial expressions and tone of voice better. Over the phone selling is a little more difficult because you only have a split second to pick up on the buying signal and get the enrollment process started before your customer starts to have second thoughts that may blockage their decision. Always be quick to address these buying signals and get the enrollment process started.

Ask for the sale:
Youll never get anywhere in a sales career if you are unable to just flat out ask for the sale. Some people need that added push, they need you to ask them for their business. Dont be afraid to ask for the sale because you are worried they will say no. The worst they can do is say no and at least you will know that you tried to get that sale. If you hear a buying signal, dont wait, ask for the sale. If your customer tells you they arent sure then go back to the ask, listen, ask, listen to determine what they might be confused about or to determine if a different policy sounds better to them. Dont ever let your customer leave with questions or confused and never let them leave without asking for their business. Remember that if you are an agent in a call center or an agent that people choose to come to, these customers came to you for a reason and they would not have called or come to you if they werent interested in what you are selling.

Match your prospect/customer:
Try to catch on to what munificent of customer you are dealing with. Is it a person who likes to talk, listen, or think. If they like to talk then make sure that there isnt any awkward silence that might make them uncomfortable, if they are a listener make sure you give them key points that are appealing and tell them exactly what you are selling, if they are peaceful or look like they are deeply concentrated on what you are telling them then ask them what they are thinking so you can make sure they are understanding everything you say. You have to think like your customer to understand them. Match your callers tone as well. If they speak step by step then you should too. If they speak loudly then they might have a hearing problem or a bad phone connection so you want to make sure that you are speaking markedly but not yelling at them. The only exception to this rule is if your customer is angry, never match an angry tone or else the situation may get aggressive and both of you will lose out.

Be assertive but not pushy:
No one likes to be bugged or pushed around. Never try to force a customer into buying something they are confused about or unsure of. Think about the last time a telemarketer call your house trying to sell you something you know you didnt want. They try to take you on the phone by not letting you speak and never take no for an answer. I know that when I get these kinds of sales people I lose respect for the company they work for and will never consider buying their product or package. If your customer is unsure then make sure you clear up anything that may be confusing to them and if they are further unsure and dont want to buy anything yet then let them go. If you bug them about buying a policy they will probably feel threatened and will scratch you permanently off their list of companies to buy from. Being assertive by asking for the sale is all you need to do and if they say no then at least you know that you did everything you could do to help the customer.

Ive followed these tips in my career as a health insurance agent and Ive been very successful at closing the sale. I never push people into something they dont want and I let them make up their own minds about what they want. I always make sure that I answer all questions to the best of my ability and if I dont know an answer I make sure that I get it. I treat my customers as if they were family or friends and I am always polite. If you make your customer feel like their needs are important to you and make them feel like they are going to be dealing with friendly people then they are more likely to go ahead and buy your policy instead of shopping around.
